Makeup Storage Solution Options for a TRUE Beauty Junkie!

After writing this article for GalleryFemme.com on storage solutions and doing some research I have come to the conclusion I need to invest in beauty storage!

Here are my options....
This drawer set is from Ikea and costs approx $149.00. This seems like a great option if you have carpet however for me I want something a bit more portable so I can wheel it around my place as I have all hardwood.

The Advantus Corporation Cropper Hopper Home Center Rolling Cart, 10 Drawer Smoke found on Amazon.com and costs approx $49usd.  Downside to this is Amazon doesnt ship this item to Canada :(

HELMER Drawer unit on casters priced at $49.99 available in silver, red and white.
This is great but a tad short (approx 2ft) for what im looking for. It is however the cheaper option and with a handy bf im sure I can think of a solution to make this taller.

MALM 6-drawer chest that costs $199.00 available in black/brown, birch, white & medium brown. I love the mirror up top and the multiple drawers, if I can find a decent spot for this in my condo I think this may be a good option to hold my items but again would prefer wheels.

So Im officially on the hunt to get my makeup stash organized! Do you have any of these units? Are there any decent ones out there I missed?

Waxing Hygiene 101 - The Double Dip

This post was inspired when a girlfriend of mine bbm'd me to see if it was normal that the place she was about to get some waxing done was "double dipping" the application spatulas into the wax after each use.

The wooden spatulas are disposable for a reason!

Why is double dipping not ok?
Wax is heated only to the point that it will melt and do the job effectively without scolding you which isn’t hot enough to kill bacteria or any viruses! Dipping the spatula back into the wax can potentially pass bacteria to each new client.

What can happen if a salon double dips?
Anything from HIV, Hepatitis B and C, warts, conjunctivitis, bacterial and fungal infections can occur.

Be aware of your surroundings next time you go to get waxed and don't be afraid to ask!

If you are still worried try threading its generally a lot more hygienic just be sure they use a new string!

Do you have a makeup routine or do you like to play with color?

I know I'm a creature of habit in almost every aspect of my life which includes my daily beauty routine. I tend to wear concealer, powder, one of 2 blushes, a neutral slightly shimmery eyeshadow, one of 3 shades of eye liners (brown, navy & black), mascara and clear gloss for shine. This is mostly because thinking that early in the morning about being creative with makeup just seems like a lot of work lol.

Today after my normal everyday routine I looked in the mirror and told my reflection I was BORING! So tomorrow I have vowed to choose a color shadow maybe even 2 and play with a lip color!

My question to you is do you have a daily routine? or do you like to play with colors and styles?

30 Fabulous Holiday Gift Ideas: #6 Cargo Cosmetics Blu_Ray High Def Mattifier!

Holiday Gift Idea #6

CARGO COSMETICS
Blu_Ray High Definition Mattifier
The blu_ray™ High Definition Mattifier is described as a pore refining, line minimizing and mattifying, this product can be used over make-up or underneath as a primer for a camera-ready complexion.
Ive written about the mattifier before and mentioned that this primer is a nude skin color that fades and blends beautifully into a translucent primer which I have never seen before. It glides one really easily and is great for those with oily skin or a T-zone that gets shiny. This product is a staple in my kit and has worked perfect on all skin types and shades.
What I like:
  • They are 100% Canadian - The name CARGO comes from the idea that makeup is every woman's "cargo." & I love that!
  • High quality product
  • Glides on really easily
  • Keeps skin matte
  • A little goes a long way
  • Helps makeup stay put
  • Evens complexion
  • Makes pores seem smaller
  • Comes in generous size
  • Can work for any skin type and skin tone
What I disliked:
  • I thought about this for a while and really couldn't come up with anything. I use this product professionally and personally and think its amazing!
 Who to gift this to:
  • Friends who complain about anything from uneven complexion to large pores to oily skin!
  • Gift exchange because everyone can use a good makeup primer especially one that keeps you matte.

I am a big fan of Cargo's products and personally own lots from their line. You can read about some of my Cargo reviews here.

Suggested retail Price: $28cdn $24usd

30 Fabulous Holiday Gift Ideas: #5 Shadow Shields!

Holiday Gift Idea #5

 SHADOW SHIELDS
Bye Bye Raccoon Eyes!
Shadow Shields are an innovative and unique solution for eliminating messy “raccoon eyes” caused by applying eye makeup. They’re moon-shaped, disposable, self-adhesives that gently stick under your eyes to catch falling pigment, eliminating that all too familiar ‘raccoon eye’ side effect experienced during eyeshadow application.
This unique and genius idea has been seen on major network shows such as Oprah and The Tyra Show so you know they are the real deal! As a makeup artist sometimes a tissue held under the eye when doing smokey eyes can hinder you as one hand is busy holding the tissue. With Shadow Shields I don't need to hold anything because the sticky adhesive on the back does all the work for me!

What I liked:
  • Left me hands free when applying makeup
  • The texture of the moon shaped pads helps fall out to stick to it
  • Comes with 30 shields per box!
  • Really straight forward to use
  • Can also be used as a lower lash mascara guard as well as an eye liner guide
  • Easy clean up
  • Leaves foundation untouched
  • Gentle and does not pull skin
  • Can be reused if for personal use or doing multiple looks on a model
What I disliked:
  • They recommend only taking of the outer corner adhesives but I found I needed to take off the whole strip on the back for them to stay on the face without lifting.
Who to gift these to:
  • Makeup Artists
  • Friends who love playing around with makeup especially smokey eyes
  • Beauty Junkies
I absolutely love the idea of  Shadow Shields its so genius yet so simple! I keep these in my kit and once I realized I that taking off the whole adhesive strip worked better for me I was hooked ;)

Suggested retail Price: $12.99 (box of 30

Availability: Online, Select Retailers

Stay tuned for a Shadow Shield giveaway!!!

* These products were sent by Shadow Shields for consideration however all reviews are based on my honest opinions.

Holiday Gift Idea #4

 BALMSHELL COSMETICS
Lip Glosses & Lip and Cheek Tints

BALMSHELL’s lip glosses are made with a high-end conditioning formula contains lanolin oil, jojoba oil and no artificial preservatives.

Glosses
What I liked:
  • Flavored with a hint of natural vanilla
  • Perfume free
  • High gloss & shine
  • Each shade has a different floating illustration
  • Illustration end unscrews and can be attached to a keychain (that comes with)
  • Non sticky
  • Wearable shades
  • No parabens
  • Really moisturizing
  • Unique concept

What I disliked:
  • Not super long wearing but really what gloss is

Lip & Cheek Tint
A gel based lip and cheek tint with a built-in antibacterial sponge applicator so you won’t get “Caught Red Handed".

What I liked:
  • Non greasy
  • Packaged with an anti-bacterial sponge applicator which will help to not stain your hands
  • Long lasting
  • Stain is pretty pigmented
  • Blends easily
  • Formula includes rose water which helps extract oil from skin
  • Love that it can be worn on more than one area (lip & cheek)
  • Wearable shades
  • Lightweight

What I disliked:
  • While I like the idea of the sponge I found it a little small for my cheek area
  • When applied to lips can feel a bit dry (most stains feel this way) but was fixed with a little gloss on top

Who to gift these to:
  • Secret Santa gifts
  • Co-workers
  • Your closest girlfriends
  • Anyone who enjoys cartoons and floaty pens :)
  • Anyone who doesn't have a lot of time and would love a multi-use product
  • All the teens/young ladies in your life.
This is how the lip & cheek tint in Gossip Greta looks on me.
This is how it looks once I added a pinky gloss on top (Caryl Baker VIsage "Sunshine")
With cute names and even cuter illustrations BALMSHELL's products are sure to be a hit with anyone on your list! You can read all about my experiences with the brand and its amazing team here.

Sunday Feature: You Go Girl! Featuring Makeup Guru & YouTuber Deepa Berar!

I haven't done a feature in a while but I'm back with a good one!

Every Sunday I feature a blogger, artist, photographer, makeup artist, actress, socialite or all around awesome person on my blog in a feature I like to call "You Go Girl!" or in some cases "You Go Boy!".

This week Ill be featuring makeup artist, YouTube guru and blogger Deepa Berar!
I've been watching Deepa's videos for a while now and always loved the way she filmed her tutorials especially being a South Asian girl I could relate to, so you can imagine my excitement when I found her blog! She has been a total sweetheart since we first started exchanging tweets and emails and I'm so happy to be able to introduce all of you to one of my favs!

Read all about Deepa's favourite beauty items, her industry influences and what's in store for the future.

_______________________________

Who is Deepa Berar and why are you so fabulous?
Haha. I don't know if fabulous is the word, I'm just your average Canadian born Indian girl with a serious love of makeup and all things girly.

Where can we find you on the world wide web?
I'm everywhere!! You can read my blog at http://blog.deepaberar.com, watch my makeup tutorials at youtube.com/deepaberar, follow me on Twitter for makeup tips twitter.com/deepaberar and check out my Facebook page under "Deepa Berar makeup artist".

My top 3 must have beauty items are?
Ooh, I love this question Farah! I never leave home without my Lash Blast mascara by Cover Girl. It gives you the fullest lashes out of any mascara that I've tried. I love kohl eyeliner and MAC studio finish concealer to cover those dark circles.

You're in a huge rush, what one beauty product do you grab?
Definitely has to be mascara. It is the one beauty item I won't go without. I have long lashes but not a lot of them so without mascara my lashes are basically non existent.

How did you get your start in the beauty industry?
Well I have loved makeup since I was a little girl and had been applying it on myself ad friends for so long but when I wanted to get serious about it I decided to go to makeup school to get comfortable with different skin tones and types. A week after was school was finished, I went to a bunch of different MAC counters and applied. As luck would have it they were actually hiring for a new location they were opening up and I got in there.

Who would you say have been your favorite celeb or high profile clients?
It has to be Leslie Stewart from the CH News & Ti-cats. She is so funny, all we do is laugh the whole time she's in my chair!

Are there any makeup or beauty faux pas you really cant stand?
Well I don't really like to say that something is right or wrong, makeup is art and therefore subjective, but if I had to pick one thing it would be heavy, visible foundation. I'm all for natural, healthy looking skin and I believe it is possible to get that natural flawless look even on the worst skin. It just takes the right products and more importantly, the right tools to apply them.

Do you have a favorite beauty guru/mentor?
I love the magic that Kevin Aucoin used to create. His work will live on forever. He is a true legend.

Favorite foundation, lipstick & mascara?
I normally use MAC Face & Body foundation, but I am really loving the Make Up For Ever HD Invisible foundation right now. It covers really well and looks so natural. Mascara would definitely be Lash Blast by Cover Girl. My favorite lipstick color is always changing! At the moment I'm in love with a limited color that was released by MAC a little while back, it's called Saint Germain. It's kinda like MAC's Snob, but brighter. I don't ever wear just one color though, I'm always mixing lip liners, lipsticks and glosses to come up with the shade I'm looking for!

What can people expect from Deepa Berar in the future?
More makeup tutorials for sure! I'm in love with both Hollywood and Bollywood so I'll feature looks based on both. I'm also the beauty expert for CityTV's "Eye On Asia" (a South Asian TV show) so expect to see more segments from me in the future. And lots, lots more, I'm just getting warmed up here.

Any last words or advice on beauty?
Makeup is meant to be fun! Play, have fun with it and don't take it too seriously. After all, it washes off at the end of the day :)
 _______________________________

Thank you so much Deepa for taking the time to chat with me. Not only is she beautiful and talented she's super nice too! If  you haven't already seen her blog and YouTube channel head on over you wont be disappointed.

30 Fabulous Holiday Gift Ideas: #3 Vasanti Cosmetics USA Lipstick!

Holiday Gift Idea #3

 VASANTI COSMETICS
'USA' Soft Finish Matte Lipstick

This gorgeous red is inspired by the soft look of deep matte reds worn by women in the 40's!

Red lips are huge for the Fall/Winter season and Vasanti's 'USA' Matte finish lipstick is at the top of my list. Its a non-drying matte formula that protects with anti-oxidants, long lasting with a suede-like finish and is very moisturizing. Evey time I wear this lipstick I get a ton of compliments and although it took me a while to get used to red lips on myself the fact that this was a red shade with blue undertones made it look amazing on my skin. I got a second one to keep in my kit and have used it on many clients who love it as well.

Here is USA on me :) and the post where I reviewed it can be found here.
 What I liked:
  • The fact that it looks like suede when you put it on
  • It makes my lips look full and sexy
  • Non-drying & very moisturizing
  • Lightweight
  • Great shade for any skin tone
  • Vasanti does not test on animals
  • Great price point
  • Long lasting color
  • Very pigmented
What I disliked:
  • Absolutely nothing!
Who to gift it to:
  • Any woman in you life who's been wanting to try a red lipstick but never thought it would suit her ;)
  • Any of Vasanti's lipsticks are great for a gift exchange because they are under $20 and feel great on the lips!
BONUS!

30 Fabulous Holiday Gift Ideas: #2 Lush Cosmetics Ocean Salt Cleanser

Holiday Gift Idea #2

 LUSH COSMETICS
Ocean Salt Cleanser

COCONUT CREAM, LIME AND SEA SALT SCRUB!

The antibacterial effects of lime and the trace of alcohol in the product is ideal for blocked pores, blackheads or blemishes. This cleanser was made with the idea of how ocean water makes your skin look after you have been on vacation "glowing".

I have been using this cleanser every other day for a few weeks now and really like the way it makes my skin feel. Yes, it leaves my sink a bit blue after I wash but its nothing a quick rinse of won't fix right?

What I liked:

  • That its all natural

  • That the company is against animal testing

  • Left my face feeling really soft and exfoliated

  • Felt like I get a deep clean every time I use it

  • Knowing if a little gets in my mouth as I'm rinsing that its ok because its natural and just tastes like salt

  • The "glow" effect it has on the skin after just a few uses (think about how your skin looks after swimming in the ocean)

  • A little goes a long way!

What I disliked:

  • The sea salt (top layer only) can feel harsh against your skin

  • Doesn't take off makeup

Who you should gift it to:
  • Anyone with oily, combo or normal skin
  • Anyone who's into natural products
  • Secret Santa gift exchange (who wouldn't love this and the 120g is under $20!)
  • Co-workers, classmates, friends & family

Suggested retail Price: $18.95 (120g) or $30.95 (250g)

Availability: Online, In any Lush Cosmetics store

    Toronto 2010 IMATS Haul

This was one busy weekend between working with Vasanti Cosmetics at the National Women's Show and the Toronto IMATS, but the lack of sleep and early mornings were well worth it. Not only did Vasanti's own Gargi Patel break the Guinness Book of World Records™ for the most lipstick applied in 1 hour (445 women!) but the show was a success and it was great to be a part of the Vasanti team once again.

Saturday was a day I had been waiting and saving for a while. I had my mental list ready and only brought the cash I had budgeted for, but all planning kind of went out the window once I got there because I'll admit I was lured in by reps I know and love, big show specials and Kandee Johnson. Yup, after hearing that woman speak first thing in the morning I ran right over to Crown Brushes to purchase her fav contouring brush the IB103 Flat Bronzer and a few other brushes.

This year had a much larger turn out than last years IMATS and I think that was partly due to the draw that KJ had (you should have seen the lineup for her meet and greet wow). Some of the big vendors there were NYX with a large booth smack dab in the middle, Crown Brushes, Makeup Forever, Face Atelier, Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics, Namies that had CoverFX at their booth, Yaby and many more.

Here are some photos courtesy of the beautiful Emily from Emily Loves whom I had the pleasure of meeting... I still cant believe she recognized me from a far Em youre good!

Now for my haul.... I spent more than I wanted to even though it was within my budget but overall I'm really happy with the items I got. I cant wait to play!
-Yaby Dramatically Neutral Pallete ($78 show special)
-Face Atelier's new darker foundations shades in 0++ and Mink #11 as well as their orangey color adjuster and blush called Heat and a few samples of some other foundation shades. (40% pro discount)
-Stila Covertable Color dual lip & cheek cream in Peony (40% off came to $20)
    -Crown brushes - IB103 Flat Bronzer ($13 or $15 cant remember), 0659 shadow brush dupe for Mac's 217 ($6.50), 1554 badger hair powder brush ($15.50), 0227 Lip brush ($2.50), 0474 pencil brush dupe for Mac's 219 ($4.50)
-ICCI brushes - Fine tip liner brush ($1), Brow comb ($1), Angle liner brush ($1)

Not a bad shopping day huh! I had a blast and was so happy I got to meet some new bloggers and reconnect with the ones I already knew.

A few have asked for a post on the Yaby palette so as soon as I play around with it I'll do one.

Did you attend the Imats? What was your favourite purchase?
