I have clients and friends who often tell me they keep mascaras and other makeup items way past their due date so I thought Id put together a guideline to help know when its time to say bye bye.
- Mascara: 3-6 Months.
- Oil-Free Foundation: 12 Months
- Cream Foundation: 12 Months
- Concealer: 12-18 Months
- Powder: 18 Months
- Blush & Bronzer: 18 Months
- Cream Blush: 12-18 Months
- Eye shadow: 18 Months
- Eyeliner: 18 Months
- Liquid Eyeliner: 6 Months
- Lipstick/Lip Gloss: 18 Months
- Lipliner: 12 Months
- Nail Polish: 12 Months
- Perfume: 2-3 years also if stored in a cool, dry place
- Sunscreen: 2-3 years, but also has an expiration date on the label.
Foundation: Warning signs = thickening, altered color, or change in odor
Concealer: Warning signs = color change or thickening
Brush, Face powder, Eye-shadow: Warning signs = texture change when applying, dryness or change in color
Mascara:Warning signs = Change in odor, texture, or color
Pencils: (for eyes or lips):Warning signs = Change in odor, texture, or color
Lipstick:Warning signs = taste or odor change, stickiness
Perfume:Warning signs = If the smell starts to change
This is just a guideline. I would say eye products such as mascara and liner follow the above guideline. Other items use your judgment, if your polish is separated, your glossy is goopy and your cream shadows have hardened get rid of it!
The last thing you want is to put the bacteria that has possibly developed on old makeup onto your face right?!
I hope this info helps some of you... if you have any other guidelines or tips to share please feel free to comment below.

great post and tips! I definitely need to do some Spring cleaning!
Great post!
I also keep a pretty close eye on the actual container, as alot of them will have how long the makeup lasts, once opened.
I also just started labeling my makeup kit products with a sticker, indicating the month/year I opened it, so I don't forget!
Thanks for a great article!
I have a question! do these timeframes still count if it hasnt been opened?? If I keep new makeup for a while and start using it later is that a bad idea? or will it be fine??
Thanks!
It shouldnt but make sure to smell and feel it when you do finally open it. If it smells or feels a bit off then it should be trashed :)
hi ms. Farah :) great post! just wondering if make up bases have expirations too? i have loreal make up base, i bought it and it's new, but when i opened it and smelled, it's like plastic but after few minutes, the smell disappeared after i blend it to my skin.what do you think?
I guess it would depend on how long you have had it.. the smell would worry me if it was there every time I opened it up to use though. If the smell was a one time thing it could be the packaging...just keep your eye on it.
Most perfumes are made with alcohol, so they should last longer than 2-3 years. If stored properly they should last indefinitely. I know because I have several mens cologne that have lasted around 10 years and I'm still using it today.
Great post! I think there are many products that women just hold on to for way too long! I have done lessons with women who still have makeup in their bag from high school that they just don't want to let go of!
Yikes I need to do some spring cleaning b/c I know I have some things that need to go-thanks for the tips =]
Great tips! I always keep one mascara and buy a new one after 2-3 months. As for the eye shadows it's not easy to use up for example 88 colors from one palette in 18 months... Do you think it's ok to use them longer?
I'm having a contest on lipstickonthecup.blogspot.com you're welcome to join it :)
Hey Great Post Farah, well I'm a perfume-a-holic and got a tendency to keep my perfumes for ages Lol! If i store perfumes in cool places, So still they need to go in trash after 2/3 years even if they' ve not been changed in colour or smell?
Eyeliner and eye shadow - 18 months? "eye" carumba! I've got shadows from 5 years ago, LOL.
Thanks for the article! Looks like I'll be tossing some stuff this weekend :)
Not to worry ladies this is just a guideline... if your perfume smells as new as the day you got it chances are its fine. I keep shadows longer too.. if it cracks, looks dry or smells I toss it.
You should be more concerned about mascara, eyeliner and makeup sponges which should be thrown out after 1-3 uses at most!
