Confessions of a Beauty Blogger....

Applying nail polish just ain't my thing!

It doesn't matter the colour, texture or brush applying nail polish on myself (and others if I'm being totally honest) just never comes out right.

I have tried tons of different brands blaming my inability to apply polish on the consistency or brush shapes, I've tried slowing down and really concentrating, even steadying my hand on a table all with no luck at all. The colour gets on my nails sure, but it also ends up on the surrounding skin, my other "applying" hand and yes even my table tops.

so I ask you is my only hope hitting up a salon to have a pro keep my hands from looking like a 9 year old child? Or is there some sort of secret to getting the perfect self polishing application??

Help!

Messy Polisher

LOL I feel the same way. I just don't like the way polish looks on my finger nails. If I do apply polish I find it easier to wipe off the brush and apply less, building up the color with more than one coat. I use tooth picks to clean up any edges while it's still wet, sometimes one finger at a time. I also use a small flat tip craft brush dipped in polish remover for clean up. If there is a giant mess, I use cotton swabs dipped in polish remover. Hope that helps a little bit :)

I have to admit i only just about perfect one finger and thats the pinky and the rest goes oh so horribly wrong - my ultimate trick is that you do your nails straight after you come in from work - be as quick and sloppy on the edges as you like, just making sure that coating on the nails are even at least and let the nails dry - now provided your not going out after or doing anything particularly important, have your shower next morning and before you get out gently scrub the nail polish off the skin using an exfoliating mit or loather - and your left with the most neatest edges :)

Give it a go - i do this all the time!

I can totally relate, I'm horrible at doing nails. Absolutely horrible. I just do my best to keep them looking neat and natural - and leave the toes to the professionals.

LOL

Dear Farah, check out this post from one of my fav nail bloggers: http://www.lacquerized.com/2010/05/how-to-how-i-paint-my-nails.html

She also includes a link to the clean up post, very helpful I find. Hope she can help you.

My little trick is that I leave a little gap between the nail polish and my cuticles. That way, less polish would get on your skin and be messy :) Also the trick to move your finger instead of the brush (in Lacquerized's post) is great too

Well I always get polish on the skin surrounding my nails - but I ONLY paint my nails at night and let them dry for a few hours, when I take a shower later that night or the next morning the polish just comes off without you having to do very much - I guess it's the water and soap I don't know - maybe try it sometime! good luck!

I can't get it quite right either...but my trick is after the polish has dried (both on the nail and surrounding skin) I dip a q-tip in nail polish remover and use it to rub off the polish on the skin. Works quite well :)

I've found 2 things that help me get a more professional looking application: 1) nail polish corrector pen - these are amazing...just tidy up as needed when you paint your nails 2)buy nail polishes that come with special wide brushes - Sally Hansen Complete Manicure polishes have them, as do the Rimmel pro polishes. These just make it easier to follow the shape of your nail, and take less strokes than the conventional brushes.

The last piece of advice is to start painting near your cuticle, but not directly on it (so the polish doesn't touch it)

Make sure that every time you put the brush back in you aren't fully dunking it. There will just be too much liquid on the brush and then your nails will have so much paint on them that it will get all on the edges... that is the best time I can give for making sure things are more clean and easy. I just dip the tip of the brush in so there is a little paint on it (enough to cover my nail in one coat).

Hope you understand what I mean...

Bu if that still doesn't help I agree with others who said to use a q-tip and some remover to clean things up after. I always do that too ;)

Good luck!
